My dear friend Kate passed away yesterday morning.

I’ve never felt sorrow and grief like I do now. I’m devastated and miss her so much.

I will always carry her with me. Kate was one of my number one supporters, so today – just after dawn – I took pictures for her.

When my best friend Christine announced she was going to graduate school five years ago, I was so proud of her and completely supportive of the idea. That is until, she told me she was moving to Ohio.

Ohio? Really? Leaving the Lone Star State for the Midwest? Leaving me behind?! I was a little bit heartbroken. However, as the years passed, I changed my tune. So many amazing things in her life have happened as a result: she earned her PHD, got married, and gave birth to an adorable baby boy, Robbie. This month, after years of wanting to make it up there, I finally hopped on a plane to visit Christine in her town: Cincinnati!

I had no real expectations going into the trip, but I now have the BEST things to say about Cincy. This All-American city is clean and urban, with pockets of sweet neighborhoods all around. Christine, Ryan and Robbie live very close to the cutest town square you ever did see. Our weekend was filled with fun activities:

Christine + Co are about to move, so it was really special to document their lives in Cincy. Of course, we had a full photo shoot dedicated to Mommy + Baby pics. :)

Looks, charm, wit, smarts? This girl’s got ‘em all, and now she can add professional head shots to the list. :)

A stunning beauty – those curls! – Cameron can make your sides hurt from laughing so hard (although she’d never brag about herself like I am doing right now).

We had the most magnificent time taking her head shots. I’m going to let you in on a little secret: when it’s misty and humid outside, that’s usually a recipe for a photo shoot disaster (curly haired girls, ya feel me?). But, check it! The weather couldn’t even phase Cameron’s beauty!

There are few things more beautiful to me than Texas in the springtime.

Maybe it’s the comfort and familiarity of wildflowers and bluebonnets as patches pop up on the side of the road. Maybe it’s the glorious change in the weather. Hey – maybe it’s the fact that allergies don’t bother me as much when the rain finally sweeps through. :) Whatever the reason(s), it’s a gorgeous time of year that deserves to be documented.

That’s why my family (+ two amazing guests ;) ) recently got together for a quick photo shoot! Extra fun part? I got to be in the pictures, too!

Kacey Musgraves is one of my new favorite artists. Her voice is so beautiful and her song lyrics are pretty brilliant.

I highly, highly recommend you check out the entire album, but Back on the Map is my personal fave.

Happy Spring. xx

hsp_dogs_9On a beautiful winter afternoon, I met up with four precious dogs (three from one family, and a tiny one from another). The weather was perfect, the outfits were superb, and with some wrangling, these models were the ultimate posers (in a good way). After reviewing the results from our session, the pups expressions and eyes almost look human to me!

This session took place at the owners’ home, and I just love how intimate each shot feels. It’s truly a “day in the life” shoot! The owners will soon receive a photo album from their friend who hired me. I am so excited to hear about their reaction. :) (As many of you well know, surprise photo shoots are some of my very favorite things to work on!)

Audrey: My cousin, my friend, my “frousin.”

I never knew how lucky I was to grow up with cousins so close to my age (out of 16 total, more than half of them are in my age group). I also never anticipated how much luckier I’d be when we were in the same city as adults. When Audrey was accepted to the University of Texas to pursue her Masters in Nursing, she moved to Austin and we started spending more time together. Instant life upgrade.

Audrey is one of those people who you can always count on. This is RARE. I consider her one of my most genuine friends, someone who always has my back and best intentions in mind. I do not take this for granted, and try to be as good a friend to her as she is to me.

hsp_aud6

Now that she’s a UT grad (hook ‘em!!), she’s moved away to begin her career. I miss her terribly, but know we will still make every effort to see each other as often as possible!

Onward, Audrey! You’re meant for great things.

2012 was a year of change and growth. As with every New Year, there’s something reassuring about starting anew. I’m entering 2013 feeling optimistic, calm, and forward-thinking. I can’t wait to see what this year holds! Who knows what kind of recap post I will be writing one year from now!

As always, I am thankful for your readership, your business, and your friendship. Her Side Project would not be what it is today without you.

This year:
I made new friendships (both inside and outside the office), finally set the Her Side Project Facebook Page live, started wearing new specs more often, upgraded my camera equipment to the Canon 5D Mark III (big personal/professional achievement!), celebrated the marriage of five different wonderful couples!, started running and training for my first half marathon on behalf of an extremely important person, celebrated one year with that certain special someone, attended several live music shows (noteworthy: Florence & The Machine and Joe Pug), joined and became quite active with an amazing organization (AWC Austin), cheered on the Texas Longhorns (Hook ‘Em!), attended another fab year of SXSW, met the famed Boot Whisperer!, supported my best friend as she became a mother, traveled extensively… and so much more.

Wishing you a bright year full of new beginnings.

All my love,
Katie

After making my way down several winding country roads, I arrived at a lovely home tucked away in the Texas Hill Country. I’d been planning this photo shoot for weeks, and I was excited. Excited to capture a beautiful family on this gorgeous piece of land, and excited to see my dear friend Melissa.

Melissa and I met in 2007 as interns at the same company. We worked together on various projects until a few years ago, when she moved to Chicago with her husband to pursue new life adventures. I miss having Melissa close by, but we do a good job of keeping in touch via social networking and email. Melissa is amazing graphic designer, and the brains behind Her Side Project’s logo and Twitter background. She is such a talent and sweet soul – I’m thankful to know her!

For the 4th of July, her family rendezvoused in Wimberly, TX. As the sun set on a hot summer day, we took pictures around the property. Melissa’s nephews were so stinkin’ cute and a joy to be around. As I edited this shoot, I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. Just looking at these pictures reminds me how loving this family is, and how much positive energy they bring to those around them.

It was really fun to see the different generations and family units interact as a big group. Melissa’s parents were present, as well as her husband, her sister’s husband and their two children, her grandmother and her stunning youngest sister (I can’t get over how beautiful these women are!). It’s sweet to see how families grow over the years. :)

Greetings from the Low Country. We’re in southern paradise for the next few days, enjoying the sites, exploring the area and applying sunscreen on the beach. Here’s a photo from our adventures at Boone Hall Plantation this afternoon. I was quite the little shutterbug on this beautiful property – more to come soon!

Stay cool,
Katie
