There are few things more beautiful to me than Texas in the springtime.

Maybe it’s the comfort and familiarity of wildflowers and bluebonnets as patches pop up on the side of the road. Maybe it’s the glorious change in the weather. Hey – maybe it’s the fact that allergies don’t bother me as much when the rain finally sweeps through. :) Whatever the reason(s), it’s a gorgeous time of year that deserves to be documented.

That’s why my family (+ two amazing guests ;) ) recently got together for a quick photo shoot! Extra fun part? I got to be in the pictures, too!

This is the story of a field. A magnificent, beautiful piece of land I notice every time I drive by. And let me tell you something: I just can’t get it out of my mind.

Yes, we may be in the middle of winter, but the white, overgrown grass is stunning. To top it off, the sunset always seems to be perfectly positioned nearby. Grass, sunset, available light… these are beautiful elements of this home we call Earth that stop me in my tracks. Places like this are a distraction, and remain so until I have a photo shoot fix.

It’s been awhile since I had portraits taken, so my man snapped a few pictures of me with my camera (while braving the cedar and putting up with my bossy direction — thanks honey). It was high time I updated my portfolio of personal pictures (see link – two years makes quite a difference)!

I love having pictures like these to share with others, look back on someday, and show clients the face behind Her Side Project. Please know I mean this in the least narcissistic way possible. I treasure them.

A simple photo shoot in the Texas sunlight was the best way to spend an evening… and now I have my field pictures. Life is good. I hope your upcoming weekend is full of fun, pretty light, and good Superbowl commercials.

Love,
Katie

For months I’ve had a very clear vision for a photo shoot on my mind. A big open field with wildflowers. A pretty baby with big blue eyes. At sunset. I was determined to turn my vision into reality.

Luckily, my friend and co-worker, Sarah, has a nine month old little girl who was perfect for the concept.

I’ve taken pictures of Sarah’s family many times, but haven’t since Kayla was only a tiny three months old. After seeing how much Kayla has grown (via Facebook), I knew I wanted to do another shoot with her ASAP. After telling Sarah about my vision, she graciously let me borrow her little one. We scheduled a date and I set out to find the perfect location.

Easier said than done. After many weeks of patiently waiting for wildflowers to pop up (and practically driving to Marble Falls and back to find a spot that apparently doesn’t exist) I finally found what I was looking for. Looking at these pictures, you might think we were out in the middle of nowhere. In all actuality, we were very close to one of the busiest streets in town: South Congress. So close to home and everything… funny how that happens.

As the sun set a glorious glow took over the fields and I got exactly what I was hoping to capture.

Sarah was very prepared, dressing Kayla in her Easter Sunday best, bringing toys and blankets and a little stool to perch her on. A cute idea in theory, it didn’t really work in practice because after about 10 seconds she toppled over and landed in the soft grass (she wasn’t hurt). It might sound funny to say, but I’m glad it happened. Otherwise some of my favorite pictures from the shoot wouldn’t exist!

The weekend is upon us! Go make something beautiful happen. The possibilities are endless. :)
