I first met him when he was three months old, so it’s hard to believe Winston is now an energetic three year old! Last month, I documented his birthday party for the third year in a row.

W’s parents are extremely cool and always have a fun theme or special element to add some pizzaz to the party. Whether a bucket of cake, silly string, petting zoo or temporary tattoos for each guest, you know these events are sure to be a fun time!

Here is a small sample of fun from our afternoon.

I’m of the strong opinion that every Texan should own a pair of cowboy boots. So, when I found out my Texas born and raised handsome man didn’t own any, I immediately knew what he was getting for his birthday (which is also my birthday too!, but more on that later).

There are many places to shop for a great pair of boots, but I wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something special in the Texas boot scene. After some research and speaking to my friend Anne, I learned about the famed Boot Whisperer in Wimberley, Texas. Anne said she was known for picking out the perfect pair of boots for each customer upon meeting them, sort of like Ollivander’s in Harry Potter. I was instantly intrigued and called the B.W. ASAP.

We connected immediately on the phone. She was very friendly and proceeded to pencil us in for a Saturday appointment. This was a birthday surprise, so as we got closer and closer to the big day, I could hardly contain my excitement.

Finally, over the weekend, we had our fateful meeting with the Boot Whisperer. It was such a fun, unique experience. We were the only customers in the store and the Boot Whisperer, Ulli, could not have been more friendly or helpful in our search. Upon our arrival, Ulli immediately bent down and examined Matthew’s foot, then raced to the back to pull options without even asking his shoe size or style preferences. Every pair she brought out was nice and most importantly, within our budget. (Don’t you just hate it when you find what you want, only to learn it’s $800 over budget? Yeah, that wasn’t going to happen here).

It was pretty overwhelming (so many options!) but after trying a few pairs, we finally found THE ONES… only to hear Ulli say “Wait, one more!”

Lo and behold, those Texas-made Justin boots turned out to be absolutely perfect. After telling Ulli she’d made a sale, she replied “You’ve just been boot whispered.”

Looking for boots? Visit Ulli, the Boot Whisperer, in Wimberley, Texas. She has every kind of vintage (hardly worn or mint condition) boot you could possibly imagine. We even held a boot from the 1940s in pristine condition. You’d think they were made yesterday based on the quality… but they’re really over 70 years old!

Afraid you live too far away? Think again: Ulli has customers (and repeat customers!) from all over the world. Leave all your excuses at home and make an appointment with the B.W. today.

On May 17th, I had a tonsillectomy. I know what you’re thinking: not very much fun (it wasn’t). I’m still recovering.

In between naps (I basically slept 24/7 last week) and drinking copious amounts of water, I watched TV. I have bedrest and television advertisers to thank for introducing me to BRAVE. I’m so glad this movie was made!

I don’t know if it was the medicine, my love for red hair, or my fascination/respect for Disney/Pixar; but every time this commercial came on I became overwhelmed with emotion!

Brave | June 22

Maybe I’m just a sap. ;) Regardless, this movie is definitely on my must-see list this summer.

Now:

Even though the first set of pictures was only taken one year ago, Winston looks so incredibly tiny!

Let me explain something to you guys. I’ve been consistently photographing this kid since he was 3 months old! From our first shoot at Hotel San Jose, to his first birthday party (unfortunately, not blogged) to today – his 2nd – it’s astounding to look back and see how much he’s grown.

But, one thing has stayed the same: a wonderful group of friends gather together every year to celebrate this special little boy. It amazes me to see how many people love him – and each other – and remain so close!

So – onto this year’s party!

What do you get when you put a cute 2 year old + cake + a petting zoo with “widdle baby goats” + silly string together? One awesome birthday party for one cool kid!

Winston was rocking Austin chic, with a Japanese batman shirt, formal grey trousers and long, tousled locks. He even sported some pretty rad tattoos (temporary of course) and showed them off at every opportunity.

I’ve been to a few parties with petting zoos now… but nothing could prepare me for the shock that the miniature pony brought into my life. There was nothing miniature about him! Even though it caught me off guard, the kids loved riding the pony and I got some great shots of their trips around the backyard.

I can only imagine how happy and proud Ginger and Jason are of their son. Even as a spectator, it warmed my heart to see him so excited in the middle of his party. He really seemed to appreciate and enjoy every aspect: from the “widdle baby goats” (his words!) to the cookie monster cupcakes… he had a blast.

Ginger + Jason: thanks again for including me in your annual tradition and once again inviting me to capture your wonderful memories and spirits! I look forward to future par-tays!

Strolling down the Drag one day, minding my own business after a photo shoot, I heard a tap on a nearby windowpane.

Right before my very eyes, the most adorable gaggle of college freshman boys grinned back at me, hands held high in the shape of a heart.

Want to know something? It really doesn’t take much to make a photographer girl’s day.
