Looks, charm, wit, smarts? This girl’s got ‘em all, and now she can add professional head shots to the list. :)

A stunning beauty – those curls! – Cameron can make your sides hurt from laughing so hard (although she’d never brag about herself like I am doing right now).

We had the most magnificent time taking her head shots. I’m going to let you in on a little secret: when it’s misty and humid outside, that’s usually a recipe for a photo shoot disaster (curly haired girls, ya feel me?). But, check it! The weather couldn’t even phase Cameron’s beauty!

There are few things more beautiful to me than Texas in the springtime.

Maybe it’s the comfort and familiarity of wildflowers and bluebonnets as patches pop up on the side of the road. Maybe it’s the glorious change in the weather. Hey – maybe it’s the fact that allergies don’t bother me as much when the rain finally sweeps through. :) Whatever the reason(s), it’s a gorgeous time of year that deserves to be documented.

That’s why my family (+ two amazing guests ;) ) recently got together for a quick photo shoot! Extra fun part? I got to be in the pictures, too!

Kacey Musgraves is one of my new favorite artists. Her voice is so beautiful and her song lyrics are pretty brilliant.

I highly, highly recommend you check out the entire album, but Back on the Map is my personal fave.

Happy Spring. xx

February 17, 2013 will go down in history as one of the best days of my life. I realize days that begin at 4:00AM are not usually described this way – BUT – this was for Team Kate. So it was worth it.

Running 13.1 miles was easily the hardest thing I have ever done. With my fabulous trainer Moe by my side, we conquered hills and long stretches of urban blocks (alongside 18,000 other athletes) for three hours and twenty five minutes. I’m usually a treadmill/trail runner, so long distance city running was definitely a new experience. I’m glad I can blog from a seated position… I’m just a little sore today (ow).

This was the biggest physical challenge I’ve ever taken on, but maintaining focus on Kate and her cancer fight (as well as the cheering from thousands of spectators) was more than enough to help me push past any discomfort. Thank you to all of my family and friends who supported me before, during and after the race. I couldn’t have done it without you.

Now to share pictures from this amazing day, and of this incredibly strong woman and her supportive family and friends. I love you, Kate.

Co-captains with Kate!:

I usually reserve this blog to talk about my photography, but today I’m writing about something different. It’s a very important topic that’s especially close to my heart.

My friend Kate has stage four melanoma. She’s 26 years old. Over the last four years, it has spread to various parts of her body; including her heart, liver, back, hip, sacrum, adrenal glands, and – most recently – her brain. Cancer in her sacrum has resulted in a fracture of the bone, forcing her to avoid any high-impact activities, including her absolute passion: running. Kate finds her inability to run the most challenging part of her cancer fight yet.

In September, my friend Steph and I discussed getting a small team together to run the LIVESTRONG half marathon on behalf of Kate. If she can’t run this one, we wanted to run it for her. At the time, we thought Kate’s closest friends and relatives would join us. Little did we know, Team Kate was about to turn into something much bigger than we could have ever anticipated.

To date, we have over 100 registered runners and have raised over TWENTY FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS ($25,000!!!) for LIVESTRONG. It makes me choke up to think about what this means for cancer patients and caregivers nationwide. Chills.

Let me tell you something about Kate: she is a fighter. My relationship with Kate is so important to me. She is truly one of the most genuine, selfless people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. I would do anything to help her, or provide some relief for this situation. And that’s exactly what I’m trying to do by participating in this half marathon on February 17th.

For a powerful piece about Kate, her fight, and Team Kate’s efforts (including photos from our recent runners brunch), read what fellow runner Sean Maguire had to say on his blog.

We are running as Team Kate to show our support for an incredible woman, cancer fighter, and friend. I appreciate everyone’s support of our team as we make a difference in the battle against cancer, and lift up Kate. So, if you can, I ask that you donate: $5, $10, $100 … every little bit helps. It would mean the world to me and all members of Team Kate. Thank you.

Love,
Katie

This is the story of a field. A magnificent, beautiful piece of land I notice every time I drive by. And let me tell you something: I just can’t get it out of my mind.

Yes, we may be in the middle of winter, but the white, overgrown grass is stunning. To top it off, the sunset always seems to be perfectly positioned nearby. Grass, sunset, available light… these are beautiful elements of this home we call Earth that stop me in my tracks. Places like this are a distraction, and remain so until I have a photo shoot fix.

It’s been awhile since I had portraits taken, so my man snapped a few pictures of me with my camera (while braving the cedar and putting up with my bossy direction — thanks honey). It was high time I updated my portfolio of personal pictures (see link – two years makes quite a difference)!

I love having pictures like these to share with others, look back on someday, and show clients the face behind Her Side Project. Please know I mean this in the least narcissistic way possible. I treasure them.

A simple photo shoot in the Texas sunlight was the best way to spend an evening… and now I have my field pictures. Life is good. I hope your upcoming weekend is full of fun, pretty light, and good Superbowl commercials.

Love,
Katie

Today’s post is about my best friend Christine, her awesome husband Ryan and their precious baby boy, Robbie! I miss this trio something fierce because we live states away from each other. While we always keep in touch via phone, text and email, it was so refreshing to spend time together in person over the New Year in Texas!

As I said on Facebook, I’ve loved watching my best friend become a mother. Not only is she setting a wonderful example for myself and others, she (and her wonderful hubby!) brought this overwhelming cuteness into the world!
