I usually reserve this blog to talk about my photography, but today I’m writing about something different. It’s a very important topic that’s especially close to my heart.

My friend Kate has stage four melanoma. She’s 26 years old. Over the last four years, it has spread to various parts of her body; including her heart, liver, back, hip, sacrum, adrenal glands, and – most recently – her brain. Cancer in her sacrum has resulted in a fracture of the bone, forcing her to avoid any high-impact activities, including her absolute passion: running. Kate finds her inability to run the most challenging part of her cancer fight yet.

In September, my friend Steph and I discussed getting a small team together to run the LIVESTRONG half marathon on behalf of Kate. If she can’t run this one, we wanted to run it for her. At the time, we thought Kate’s closest friends and relatives would join us. Little did we know, Team Kate was about to turn into something much bigger than we could have ever anticipated.

To date, we have over 100 registered runners and have raised over TWENTY FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS ($25,000!!!) for LIVESTRONG. It makes me choke up to think about what this means for cancer patients and caregivers nationwide. Chills.

Let me tell you something about Kate: she is a fighter. My relationship with Kate is so important to me. She is truly one of the most genuine, selfless people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. I would do anything to help her, or provide some relief for this situation. And that’s exactly what I’m trying to do by participating in this half marathon on February 17th.

For a powerful piece about Kate, her fight, and Team Kate’s efforts (including photos from our recent runners brunch), read what fellow runner Sean Maguire had to say on his blog.

We are running as Team Kate to show our support for an incredible woman, cancer fighter, and friend. I appreciate everyone’s support of our team as we make a difference in the battle against cancer, and lift up Kate. So, if you can, I ask that you donate: $5, $10, $100 … every little bit helps. It would mean the world to me and all members of Team Kate. Thank you.

Love,
Katie

I Live Here I Give Here (ILHIGH) is an incredible organization in Austin that aims to mobilize businesses, groups and individuals to give back to our community. Their reach is unprecedented, literally touching thousands of non-profits in town, and their success is admirable. Their call to action is find issues Austinites care most about and encourage them to give to become part of the solution. What a cool concept.

ILHIGH hosts an annual event called The BIG Give. Basically it’s a fun party dedicated to highlighting and honoring noteworthy philanthropic efforts. This year, thanks to my good friend and BIG Give committee member, Lauren, I was the event photographer!

Guests mingled at The Belmont Austin while sipping on Cruz Tequila cocktails, dancing to Black Joe Lewis & the HoneyBears and bidding on action items. Other activities included: taking pictures in a stationary photobooth with crazy costumes to enhance any outfit, hanging out with a custom cigar roller straight off 6th street (cinammon flavored was the best… or so I heard ;) ) and enjoying a catered meal (complete with amazing dessert). What more could you ask for?

Several nonprofits from the community were in the running to win ILHIGH’s largest prize: a $10,000 check! At the end of the night, as everyone eagerly anticipated the results, Any Baby Can was announced as the winner! I was touched by the genuine surprise and happiness that emanated from the group. It was clear how incredibly appreciative and grateful they were to win. I know the award money is going to be put to very good use! Congratulations, Any Baby Can!

Without further ado, check out the beautiful people, venue and overall event in picture form. Austin is Beautiful.

Hello reader! I thought I’d introduce myself today in case you are new to my blog and found out about it from Becky Higgins.

Hi, I'm Katie! Photo by Sweet Fix Photography

I’m so glad you stopped by. Feel free to dive deep into the archives for some fun images. I think everyone deserves to have amazing photos of themselves and family members to look back on for years to come. Making people look good is pretty much Her Side Project’s main mission.

Last but not least, feel free to leave a comment here or on Becky’s site. I am looking forward to meeting a special family to photograph in the wonderful Austin area.

Happy Monday!
Katie

I have admired Jeremy Cowart, stunning celebrity and musician photographer, for many years now. I first found out about him and his work through Dave Barnes, a singer/songwriter I adore and have seen in concert countless times. Today, on another photo blog, I found the following embedded video:

Jeremy has a powerful vision he is promoting and encouraging others to participate in out of the kindness of their hearts. I am going to make my best effort to find a way to give back to my community through my work and hope that you may feel inclined to do so as well. I am impressed Jeremy is taking the initiative to serve others and is leveraging his credible reputation to spread the word.

Happy photographing, designing, serving… whatever it may be! Leave a comment if you have a story to tell. I’ll be sure to share mine.
