Happy, happy 5th birthday to one of the coolest kids around: Liam!

glowbowl_hsp12

Liam and his parents threw an unforgettable glow bowl part-ay at the Union Underground. From bowling ball cupcakes, to glow stick necklaces, to mini bowling alley decorations on the table — Jennifer had every detail down to a T. The kids seemed to enjoy every minute – and so did the parents!

The room was evenly divided between bowlers and air hockey fanatics. A good time was had by all!

As a communications professional, I’m always looking for ways to keep my strategic approach fresh and stay up-to-date on all the tools at my disposal. That’s one of many reasons why I think AWC Austin’s annual event, Get Smart, is awesome. Show up ready to learn from the best and brightest; leave with new skills and info to use in your daily life. Check and check.

The speakers at this year’s event are spectacular. Here’s a quick rundown of who will be there, and what you can look forward to:

Last week, I attended a great reception at Carmelo’s for the Get Smart speakers and organizers. Here’s a preview of the wonderful people who will be in attendance on September 21st, many of whom are your esteemed speakers.

We can all benefit from learning something new, and Get Smart is a great place to do just that. Final registration ends tomorrow, so don’t delay!

I’ll be photographing the event and sincerely hope to see you there! Special thanks to co-chairs Cristen James and Julie Lara for including me in this fabulous event!

Last week, I had the honor and privilege of photographing Mr. Julian Read’s 85th birthday party at the Austin Club.

This party had a GREAT theme. It was vintage press inspired (in honor of JOR’s successful career) with decor including an old fashioned typewriter, “press font” on all signage and cake with a typewriter design!

Party planners provided a press card to put in my hat to complete my old school photographer ensemble.

Every touch was authentic and evoked many memories for the attendees.

I very much look up to JOR. He is a PR and communications veteran with deep roots in Austin AND Fort Worth, TX (he clearly has a powerful network of successful individuals in the state). He is admirable and the speech he gave that night was awe-inspiring.

But most importantly, his birthday celebration was a big hit. The venue was decked out with tables of memorabilia from his career (nearly 60 years!), a slideshow projecting old photographs onto a stationary screen, good eats and drinks galore and great conversation from every corner of the room.

It was a lovely event. I’m so glad I was there. Happy birthday, JOR! Hope the 85th is your best year yet!

  • Pork chops with a dijon mustard and brown sugar glaze

Today’s post is brought to you live from Colorado Springs! In order to pack for this mini-vacation, I had to dig out all of my winter clothes. All was going well until I made an unfortunate discovery: one of the buttons on my favorite coat came off. Button in one hand, coat in the other, did I know how to fix it? Absolutely not.

You see, this is where my friend Caroline could’ve really lent a hand. Caroline grew up by her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother’s side; three women who knew and believed women can be domestic AND empowered. That they can make a home AND a career. And that they can be good at both.

Recently, I spent a morning with Caroline to photograph her beautiful face and document her work in the kitchen for her new website (coming soon): Domestic Darlin’: Modern Messages for the Domestically Challenged. The purpose of the site is to teach basic domestic skills to other women who may not have had the luxury of hands-on learning in the home, or simply haven’t developed confidence in these areas. Caroline believes every woman can master domestic skills, they just need a little guidance and direction to get started.

I really believe that as young women, there are certain little, simple skills that go a long way towards make your home a warm, welcoming place for you, your friends, and/or your family. And the ability to create that environment lends itself toward creating happy memories and stronger family ties. What makes our generation of women so strong is that we can do anything. But in getting to this point, and fighting through feminism, homemaking acquired a certain stigma. I’ve even made snide comments about girls who go to college for their “MRS degree.”

Three generations taught Caroline everything she knows about sewing buttons, baking from scratch, arranging flowers and so much more. A large part of her childhood was spent in the kitchen: baking bread with her great-grandmother, cakes with her grandmother and learning from (and actually meeting!) Martha Stewart with her mom. Growing up in her home, the kitchen was the gathering place, more than a TV or family room.

The women in my family have carried on very strong, domestic traditions, but are still very independent, intelligent women. I remember finding a button of my great grandmother’s (Randy Duncan) that said “A woman’s place is in the House…and the Senate, and the Oval Office.” She was a super feminist for her time!

Lessons coming soon on the Domestic Darlin’s website. Until then, if you’re interested in learning more or want to ask Caroline a question directly, follow her on Twitter @crfabacher or @adomesticdarlin. While you’re at it, you might want to ask her for the brownie recipe she used the day of this shoot. They are seriously the best brownies I’ve ever had in my LIFE! I know I’m looking forward to following the DD’s work, and picking up a few new skills of my own! Who knows, maybe I’ll even be able to fix this coat button.

On tonight’s menu: Scrambled Omelettes!

Last time I made this dish, I couldn’t help but notice the brilliant colors as I mixed everything together. Since it’s so good and pretty when prepared, I thought I’d share the recipe and scenes from my kitchen!

Ingredients
:

  • Eggs – as many as you’d like (I use 2)
  • Tomatoes
  • Sliced ham
  • Fresh jalapeños (hot hot hot!)
  • 2% Mexican Jack cheese
  • Mushrooms
  • Medium-hot salsa
Instructions:
Pour eggs into a skillet with a bit of olive oil or light butter. Add sliced ingredients.
Cook on medium to high heat until the eggs are fully scrambled and cooked.
Arrange on a plate and, if you want to add more kick to the dish (which I always do), add a few spoonfuls of salsa on the side.
While this meal may be full of traditional breakfast foods, it’s a great quick and easy dinner. Gotta love brinner.

She may live in Cincinnati, but Christine’s roots are in Austin, Texas. It was only fitting that our fair city and hometown serve as the inspiration for our best friend’s bridal shower.

After months of planning and plotting, the big night finally arrived. From classic Texas decor to Austin inspired cookies (guitars, stars and bats anyone?) our theme was complete. Here are a few scenes from the celebration!

We love you, Christine! You’re the best friend a girl could ask for!

Special thanks to my sister, Laura, for stepping behind the camera to grab a few shots from the party. Without her, I might not be in any!
