There’s something special about spending time in the Texas Hill Country. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a city girl through and through, but nothing compares to the moment I’m in a wide open space, breathing fresh air and basking in the quiet. My troubles miraculously disappear and I can simply live.

Sometimes I don’t realize when I need a break. That said, at the beginning of the month of March, I was absolutely aware I needed one. Between the rush of the city, a busy travel schedule and a series of commitments (both professional and personal), I wanted to get away – if only for a day. Before I could begin brainstorming ways to get to the hill country, my cousin Audrey invited me to accompany her to our friend Hendrika’s ranch. Two hours outside of Austin, and just seven miles from the town of Llano, H’s family homestead awaited.

We hit the road early Saturday morning, coffee in hand, blasting old favorite songs and feeling the cool, crisp air as the windows were rolled down. Part of me didn’t want the road trip to end, but as soon as we got closer to the ranch, I began to get really excited.

I mean, this is a real ranch, y’all. With horses and funny donkeys and goats and dogs and miles and miles of acreage and it was wonderful. I explored various aspects of the land with Audrey and Hendrika, stopping to take pictures of the animals, the scenery and anything else that peaked my interest.

For hours we didn’t have a care in the world as we drove around the property, listened to country music, fed goats/horses and explored a cave.

I even did a little target practice. Yes, me, who shot a shotgun once in 1999 and haven’t tried it since, handled a pistol and a revolver like a champ. I didn’t like the revolver, it was too difficult to shoot, but I loved the pistol. Hendrika’s stepfather even told me I was a good shot. I honestly believe it’s because I’m so used to aiming with my camera (which sounds kind of funny, but there’s really no other reason for me to be good at it!) PLEASE NOTE we were only shooting targets, not actual animals! I would never, people, never!

But she might… ;)

Ten thousand pictures, seven hours and one sunburned Katie later, it was time to head home. Audrey and I reluctantly loaded up her city Volvo (a big difference after spending the day in Hendrika’s truck!) and hit the road back to Austin. We made a quick detour at Cooper’s – so, so good – but before we knew it we were back in the city limits, good memories intact.

A day in the hill country was exactly what I needed, especially with good friends like Audrey and Hendrika. H – thank you so much for having me and giving me a glimpse into the life you knew growing up. It is wonderful and I sincerely hope to come back one day.

And I’m her maid of honor! I am so thrilled to announce that one of my favorite people in the world, Christine, is engaged to the most perfect guy for her: Ryan.

After meeting in Cincinnati, OH, while attending Xavier’s PsyD program (yep, they’re gonna be doctors!), a girl from Austin, Texas and a boy from Eaton, Ohio became fast friends. After a year of study groups, attending social gatherings and working together in the student health center, they became nearly inseparable. There was something about the way Christine spoke about Ryan that made me a little suspicious of their “platonic relationship.” I detected greater feelings that she was not letting on. I remember accusing her of liking him, but she’d laugh it off and tell me I was funny (notice she never denied it). I’ll never forget the day she called me to confess her romantic interest. I had just arrived at my storage facility in Austin after making the long drive with the movers from Fort Worth. I remember Christine sharing details of their first date, and telling me how she really, really liked him. That it was different with him (in a good way), and that the transition from friendship to relationship was so easy it was hardly noticeable. All I could think was “I told you so.” :)

There’s something y’all should know about the significance of this engagement. I know most young girls grow up dreaming of their wedding and future husband, but this has been a main topic of conversation between C & I for many, MANY years. Through thick and thin we’ve been there for each other during exciting life milestones, sad breakups, going to different universities, etc, and while we currently live thousands of miles a part, we remain extremely close. Because of Christine I got to use a trampoline in her backyard growing up even when my parents wouldn’t buy me one. Because of Christine, I got to get my hair and makeup done at a salon in middle school for her 13th birthday party. Because of Christine, I have a first-hand understanding of what real friendship means. I couldn’t be luckier. These reasons and more are what make this engagement so special to me.

One night last Fall, shortly after Ryan popped the question, Christine and I were on one of our famous marathon phone conversations when she brought up wanting to take engagement pictures. “I’m kind of nervous! What are we going to look like? Is it going to be awkward to pose?”

I took the opportunity to reassure her. “Look,” I said, “this isn’t about making you and Ryan look really good (although that won’t be hard). This is about capturing you and Ryan as you are now, today: freshly engaged and eagerly anticipating starting the rest of your lives together.”

“Oh,” she said quietly. “I like that.”

So, as promised, I did just that: captured Christine & Ryan, just as they are today: wonderful people who are very much in love. The pops of color (including Christine’s red hot heels) and new cowboy boots for both of them truly make the pictures. Well that and their ear-to-ear grins, despite the freezing cold temperature!

Keep your fingers crossed we’re able to make the second part of the shoot happen: Cincinnati style – before the wedding this December. It’ll take some coordination and penny-pinching, but I’m determined to make it happen for my best friend.

Boudoir. Pin-up. 1940′s Sexy. It all started with my vision for a vintage photo shoot and was brought to life with the perfect model: my roommate and good friend, Anne. A classic beauty, it goes without saying that she was made for this era. In anticipation of the shoot, Anne picked up some time period dresses from Lucy in Disguise, gathered her antique jewelry and mentally prepared for a two part photo shoot: half featuring classic clothes and soft makeup, the other half pin-up with dramatic red lips and false eyelashes.

Only we didn’t get that far. Our original shoot date was postponed due to illness and by the time the second attempt rolled around (our last opportunity with the clothes) we had about 2 hours to work with. For those that may not know, 2 hours for hair, makeup, getting dressed and shooting is not a very long period of time. I’ll tell you what though, we worked as quickly as we could and made the most of it! Even though it was rushed, we were able to grab many wonderful frames for the first half of the shoot. Some of the following photos literally took my breath away while editing.

The majority of these photos are in black and white to enhance the vintage look and feel, but I had to include two color versions (so pretty!). I have to say, not only is Anne a gorgeous woman, but she is strikingly beautiful and convincing in 1940′s attire. LOVE IT.

Hoping to reschedule another time soon for the dramatic, pin-up look. Until then, I will continue to l-o-v-e these photos and maybe play some vinyls on the record player. (kidding, but I wish I could!) Love you, A!

World, meet Laura & Michael. Mayyybe one of the cutest couples I’ve ever met – and not just because of their looks (although obviously that’s a large part of it). They’re just the type of people you want to know: kind, genuine and extremely hard-working. In celebration of L&M I must mention that they celebrated their first wedding anniversary in 2010! Congratulations, y’all.

The proud parents to two adorable dogs, they love their puppies more than you can possibly imagine.

Just before the holidays, we ventured out into the cold to take some photos of their young family: two lovebirds, two lucky puppies and a whole lotta love.

I am pleased to present to you the story of Nick and Amy. There is only one place for me to start, and that’s at the very beginning.

I met Nick, my officemate, a year ago when I returned to our Austin location. He works in a different department than me, but we see each other occasionally in the hallway. I couldn’t hide my surprise one morning in October when he approached me about a “non work related” question. He explained he was planning to propose to his long-time girlfriend, Amy, on November 20th in Fredericksburg, Texas. He described his planning process from the past six months: picking the perfect venue (Becker Vineyards), preparing the menu for a picnic under a big oak tree on the property and collecting photographs to create a scrapbook of their entire relationship. The best part of the book? The very last page featured a photo of Amy’s best friends, taken at the vineyard, holding a sign that said “Say Yes!”

Amy’s birthday was the week of Thanksgiving, so this special trip to the heart of Texas wine country was disguised as her birthday celebration (with the scrapbook as her surprise present). Little did Amy know, the trip was to be so much more than that.

As if this story didn’t already have my attention, Nick hit me with the following:

“I’m not sure if you do this kind of photography but would you be interested in secretly taking pictures of the proposal from afar?”

I almost fainted from excitement. Would I? I can’t think of anything else I’d rather do! Completely blown away and honored that Nick would include me in this major life milestone, we began plotting the day.

Considering that it might seem strange for me to be by myself, taking pictures of Nick and Amy/weirding them out, I commissioned my friend Anne to go with me. Anne would be my “model” for our pseudo photo shoot at the vineyard. That way, I could pretend to take pictures of Anne, while really focusing beyond her on the happy couple.

Here’s how we mapped out the day:

  1. Anne and I planned to arrive at Becker shortly before noon, scope out the property and wait for Nick and Amy to arrive.
  2. About 30 minutes later, I would wait for Nick to send me a text message letting me know they’d arrived.
  3. I’d stalk them and take pictures while waiting for the present to be opened after they ate lunch.
  4. As soon as the present made an appearance, I’d photograph the entire proposal from start to finish.

In addition to all of these steps, I was also responsible for calling Nick’s best friend, Sam, to let him know when he and a group of their closest friends should arrive to celebrate after the proposal. Amy thought the trip was just going to be with Nick, so she was sure to be very surprised!

November 20th arrived and Anne and I roadtripped to Fredericksburg. We approached beautiful Becker Vineyards and the weather was just perfect.

It wasn’t very long before the VIP arrived too. In that moment, I morphed into a member of the paparazzi.

The Arrival

Unsuspecting Amy, Nervous Nick

Approaching the Picnic Site (Nick didn't even put that sign there!)

I spent a lot of time hiding behind a fence. This is what I saw.

For the next several minutes, we waited. When I grew tired of taking the same photo over and over, we grabbed some great ones of my wonderful assistant, Anne.

But although it felt like we had ample time to waste, it quickly evaporated as the gift appeared and it was business time.

Opening the Gift

The shutter rapidly clicked as I took frame after frame after frame. All of a sudden, thanks to my zoom lens, I could see the ring box in Nick’s left hand. The book was coming to an end, and the big moment was about to happen. Before I knew it, he was on one knee, Amy had her face in her hands and I was crying. That’s right – tears were streaming down my face while simultaneously taking pictures. That was a unique experience I won’t forget anytime soon.

Immediately after proposing, Nick pointed me out in the distance. Amy couldn’t believe the photographer she had been commenting about during the picnic (“Who is that? That model is pretty. I wonder what they’re taking pictures for?”) was actually there for her and had documented the entire thing. :) Suddenly, a group of their closest friends ran up to the picnic, completely surprising Amy.

Shortly after, Nick waved me over. I threw on my sunglasses and joined the celebration for some up close shots. From there, we launched into a full blown engagement photo shoot session (and did some group pictures too!)

At one point a ladybug landed on Amy's ring!

As we walked around the grounds taking photos, word spread around the vineyard that these two had just gotten engaged. Many people clapped and cheered as we passed by, and when a small band was playing on the porch, everyone looked on as Nick and Amy took a few moments to dance.

After awhile, we settled in the grass under the big oak tree and enjoyed a glass of wine. Amy called her mom, Nick called his dad and everyone relished in the excitement of the day. By this time, I felt as though I was part of their group, good friends with everyone. It doesn’t get much more welcoming than that.

It was the perfect ending to the most perfect day. Nick and Amy: congratulations and thank you again for inviting me to be part of your engagement. I wish you both the very best!

A thousand times thank you to Chris, mom to Nola, a precious baby I had the privilege of photographing a year ago (has it really been a year?!). She is one of my favorite examples of the power of word of mouth.

After our photo session, she shared the results on Facebook and Flickr, providing photo credit to Her Side Project on each individual photo. I appreciated it at the time, but it wasn’t until several months later that I experienced the true magnitude of her actions. Whether realizing it or not, (although I’m pretty sure she knew what she was doing!) she increased my exposure and provided opportunities for me to meet future clients.

The first photo shoot I had based on her referral was terrific. This time was no different. Cue: the Sabin Family. Friends of Chris who are now friends of mine.

Oh how I adore this family for so many reasons. A few can be found on the list below.

They were:

  • SO happy and willing to try anything for the right shot
  • Genuinely excited for me to be there, photographing their sweet son, Devin
  • Loving to one another
  • Gorgeous house
  • Incredible family unit: Dad, Mom, Grandma, Baby and two adorable dogs
  • Good, positive attitudes
  • Willing to shoot the entire time, not in a hurry to end the session
  • Had the most perfect little red chair I have ever seen in my life to take photos of little Devin

I delivered these photos to their doorstep the day before Thanksgiving. As I dropped them off, I couldn’t help but feel extra thankful for my life, the wonderful people in it, and the network that has risen to meet me in Austin over the past year. I’d always hoped for support and engagement like this, but never dreamed it could happen so naturally. An large part of this success is due to those who have and continue to spread the word. Thank you, Sabin Family, and all others in my life who make Her Side Project everything that it is. I appreciate it more than you can possibly know.

Light Chasers

I lived with one of my best friends, Dianne, for two years in college. Those years hold some of my very favorite memories. Some include her older sister, Julie, and today’s post is about her.

As the big sister in my family, I never had someone to look up to, ask for advice about life milestones, or live through vicariously. Dianne had all of this and more, so when we were roommates – Julie occasionally filled this role for me (whether she knew it or not!)

I can still remember sitting in the dorms freshman year and all the guys going on and on about D’s beautiful and stunning older sister. When I officially established Her Side Project, I heard Julie was interested in modeling for my portfolio. Unfortunately, a move to a different city and busy lives got in our way. Fast forward two more years, we became closer friends after Dianne’s wedding activities and kept in touch via gchat conversations. And finally, last weekend, Julie took a trip to Austin and stepped in front of my camera.

Given that I’d hoped to add Julie to my portfolio for many years, I already mapped out a vision in my mind for her photos. I wanted an urban setting, dramatic makeup, and trendy/unique wardrobe pieces. After explaining this to Julie, she immediately called her good friend Angelique to style the shoot. Angelique, a former celebrity stylist, has the most amazing collection of shoes, clothes, jewelry, props and makeup. I had so much fun rummaging through her room, picking out the items that I wanted to photograph most. I hope to work with her again for future photo shoots!

There is something so eloquent about putting a beautiful subject in a chaotic, random and messy environment. Historical Rainey St. in Austin afforded us some very intriguing backdrops. The time spent selecting Julie’s wardrobe, plus the rapidly approaching Daylight Savings Time significantly dimming the evening sky, Julie and I scrambled around in search of well-lit areas. To anyone witnessing our mad dash from the field, to the car, to a cultural center nearby, it was clear to see we were chasing the light.

With the time allotted, I’m amazed we were able to squeeze in three outfits and capture as many fantastic shots as we did. I’m so beyond thrilled with these photos, but I’m not going to lie, I wish we had a little more time and light to capture even more. Oh well, just means we must have to do another shoot in the near future!

{When Julie donned a bright, full red skirt, a mariachi band happened to stroll by carrying their instruments. Would you believe, they briefly serenaded us? With that outfit, it just seemed wildly appropriate.}

Thanks for the adventure, Julie. It was so much fun.

Remember Sarah, her husband Russell and their little girl Leah? A short seven months ago, these three were eagerly anticipating the newest addition to their family: Baby Kayla. Well, Kayla’s here! Now that she’s three months old, it was time for another round of family portraits.

We began the shoot around 7:45am on a Saturday morning. The sun was rising over the city with the most brilliant orange glow cast in the sky. Fall is here.

The girls were so well behaved as we took pictures in the newly landscaped backyard (way to go, Russell!) and on the sidewalk in front of the porch. The lighting was to die for, and I couldn’t wait to head over to the nearby pumpkin patch to grab some seasonal photos.

Much to my dismay, the very same clouds creating a nice softbox for the early morning photos decided to cause some trouble. A few drops turned into a steady mist, which turned into a slow drizzle… which turned into a downpour. We headed indoors for shelter and used the minutes waiting for the rain to pass to take portraits of Kayla by herself.  We waited and waited, even sat ready by the door to leave, but the rain refused to slow down. We had no choice but to scrub the shoot for the day.

I was really disappointed. We were on a roll and I wanted to take pictures of the family at the pumpkin patch! It didn’t take long for me to suggest returning the following morning to resume the second half of our session. Sarah protested a little bit, but I insisted. I knew there was more to capture!

6:30am rolled around far too soon again but we all made it to the patch by 8am. As we turned the corner to reveal the location, I was instantly thrilled. The sky’s orange glow was back, paired with a picturesque scene of pumpkin piles and lights strung across the grounds. Just beautiful!

And just like that, the session was saved by a new morning, Radio Flyer wagon and a sea of pumpkins. Can’t wait until the next shoot!

It seems to me nearly all photographers suffer from the same frustration. While taking beautiful photos of people in our lives is rewarding (and a gift we’re more than happy to share) it’s bittersweet when we realize, for the most part, no one is capturing the same kinds of memories for us.

One of my colleagues and friends, Alan, is a fellow photographer. While he has thousands upon thousands of photos documenting his wife and 1 1/2 year old daughter, there are only a handful that actually include him. Knowing that I most likely face the same never-in-pictures dilemma, Alan approached me with a bartering agreement. In exchange for me taking pictures of his family, he offered to take pictures of me. That’s right! There may be some recent, professional-quality photos of yours truly coming soon!

Xiomara, Alan’s beautiful wife, Alan and their precious daughter, Sophia, are an endearing and gorgeous family. Sophia was so cute the morning of the photo shoot, softly repeating my name a few times after meeting me. So sweet! If you look up “family” in the dictionary you might find one of the photos below next to the definition. They’re incredibly picturesque. At the risk of embarrassing them, I will tell you I had several colleagues express utter delight when I announced this photo shoot was coming up. (okay okay, I was thrilled too!)

This was my first time to meet Sophia in person and I was surprised to learn she has different colored eyes: one green and one blue. As I edited the photos, I realized Sophia’s eye colors match the exact shade of her parents: green for Alan and blue for Xio. How rare and stunning.

I’m so happy with all of the results. I’ll keep y’all posted on the results of my shoot after I step on the other side of the camera.

Disclaimer: the following post does not necessarily reflect the views of Her Side Project.

Unless you don’t live in Texas, you most likely know Bill White, the Former Mayor of Houston, is the Democratic candidate running for Texas Governor. White has a dedicated committee of young political activists that make up a special coalition called Bill White’s New Leaders Council. Members of this group volunteer and host events on behalf of the campaign/issues they care about. Last week, the New Leaders hosted a fundraiser/sold out screening called Texas Filmmakers for Bill White.

The event kicked off at Alamo Drafthouse, what I consider the best movie theater in the city. Alamo was still open for regular moviegoers, but a large part of the building (read: lobby, largest room in the joint) was solely dedicated to the campaign event. I snapped away as people poured in, stuck nametags to their jackets and took a seat in the dark theater. Some were meeting friends, some strolled by in pairs of two, but no matter who attendees arrived with, they were all there for one reason: to see White speak and watch films dedicated to spreading his campaign messages.

Ah yes, let me explain the film aspect of this jamboree. I had no idea what to expect upon arrival. I knew it was a political campaign event… and I understood it was taking place at a movie theater… (so surely a movie had to be involved) but why? As it turns out, it was to showcase individual films from different talented Texas filmmakers. Over 200 artists applied to be in the running but only 12 were chosen to create a political film endorsing White for Governor. The films were educational, moving, hilarious, thought-provoking and at times, straight up gangsta (rap music video anyone? my personal fave).

The films were watched, several speeches were made, White greeted the crowd and dedicated time for in depth conversations, hugs and handshakes. Immediately following, attendees (White included) made their way to The Highball for drinks, live music and conversation.

What a good group of people and a great event. Movies, music, passionate advocates and an open bar? Pretty much a recipe for success.

Are you voting? Don’t forget, Election Day is just around the corner (November 2nd) and early voting will be open from October 18th-29th.
