I first met him when he was three months old, so it’s hard to believe Winston is now an energetic three year old! Last month, I documented his birthday party for the third year in a row.

W’s parents are extremely cool and always have a fun theme or special element to add some pizzaz to the party. Whether a bucket of cake, silly string, petting zoo or temporary tattoos for each guest, you know these events are sure to be a fun time!

Here is a small sample of fun from our afternoon.

The moment I heard the news I thought, “Oh, how perfect.”

You see, my colleague Laura and her husband Michael are going to be the best parents. These two exude happiness and joy! They’re expecting their first child and this baby is already so loved!

I had the best time with L&M in downtown Austin as the sun was setting on the city. We got to photograph some areas I’d eagerly scouted out, and each place helped capture part of their personalities and relationship.

So looking forward to meeting Michael Jr. this summer. Until then, we will all have fun anticipating his arrival. :)

Today’s post is about my best friend Christine, her awesome husband Ryan and their precious baby boy, Robbie! I miss this trio something fierce because we live states away from each other. While we always keep in touch via phone, text and email, it was so refreshing to spend time together in person over the New Year in Texas!

As I said on Facebook, I’ve loved watching my best friend become a mother. Not only is she setting a wonderful example for myself and others, she (and her wonderful hubby!) brought this overwhelming cuteness into the world!

I had so much fun taking your family portraits, Christine. I know Robbie will be so different the next time we see each other. I will forever treasure these pictures!

2012 was a year of change and growth. As with every New Year, there’s something reassuring about starting anew. I’m entering 2013 feeling optimistic, calm, and forward-thinking. I can’t wait to see what this year holds! Who knows what kind of recap post I will be writing one year from now!

As always, I am thankful for your readership, your business, and your friendship. Her Side Project would not be what it is today without you.

This year:
I made new friendships (both inside and outside the office), finally set the Her Side Project Facebook Page live, started wearing new specs more often, upgraded my camera equipment to the Canon 5D Mark III (big personal/professional achievement!), celebrated the marriage of five different wonderful couples!, started running and training for my first half marathon on behalf of an extremely important person, celebrated one year with that certain special someone, attended several live music shows (noteworthy: Florence & The Machine and Joe Pug), joined and became quite active with an amazing organization (AWC Austin), cheered on the Texas Longhorns (Hook ‘Em!), attended another fab year of SXSW, met the famed Boot Whisperer!, supported my best friend as she became a mother, traveled extensively… and so much more.

Wishing you a bright year full of new beginnings.

All my love,
Katie

What makes a successful family photo shoot?

  • Perfect weather
  • An overcast day, with occasional sunshine rays peeking through
  • Happy family members
  • A newborn baby girl
  • A butterfly landing on someone’s shoulder (that’s good luck!)
  • Christmas lights and decor

Oh how I love the holidays. It is such a bright time of year, and a chance for loved ones to come together from near and far. You may recognize members from this sweet family as I’ve photographed them before. However, you should also spot a new face in the crowd! This family was blessed with a precious baby girl last month. What a wonderful early Christmas present!

“Are you talking about me?”

camdyn_hsp2

There are few things sweeter than a baby’s first Christmas. As the holiday season quickly approached, I met Camdyn, the adorable little lady you see above, and her fabulous parents at a local park. We took six month portraits of Camdyn, as well as family photos for their holiday card!

I couldn’t – and still can’t – get enough of her big, beautiful eyes, fun expressions, and sweet demeanor.

As dear friends of my Dad’s, I knew about sweet Cam before she was born. Her arrival was highly anticipated! Now that she’s here, we just can’t get enough of her sweet face, soft hair (seriously, softest hair ever) and fantastic personality.camdyn_hsp5

I’m pleased to announce my best friend (Christine) and her husband (Ryan) are the proud new parents of a little boy! Robbie came into the world today – a perfect 7 lbs, 10 oz! Happy birthday, baby Robbie! Congratulations, Christine & Ryan.

Robbie and his parents live far away. That said, I want to chronicle October 8th from the AUSTIN, TEXAS perspective. Just a few tidbits for me to remember this day vividly.

| October 7-8, 2012 | Austin, TX |

Robbie:

  • On your birthday eve, I was making chili stew (with gluten free, hatch-chili cornbread!) and sipping wine when your mom let me know she was on the way to the hospital. At this point you were one week overdue. We were excited. Baby time!
  • The next morning, I woke up wondering why I hadn’t received any news overnight. Turns out you liked taking your time.
  • Greeted a beautiful fall day with highs in the 70s, lows in the 50s. A dream come true for us Texans!
  • Exchanged text messages and phone calls with folks (Katie, Laura, Mom, Debra, Christine, Ryan, Matthew) awaiting the good news!
  • Finally got an update from your Aunt Katie in NYC — you were born! 12:47pm ET. Healthy, happy, so cute.
  • Checked the calendar – ACL (Austin City Limits Festival) is a mere 4 days away. Future music lover?
  • Called Debra (your grandma!) on the phone. She and your grandpa are over the moon that you’re finally here.
  • Finally heard from your mom and dad via text… they’re deliriously happy (we all are!)
  • Final observations: from what I can tell so far, you look a lot like your dad but have your mom’s eyes. :)

Kid, it’s been a few hours and you’ve already made the world a better place. That’s gotta be some kind of record. Looking forward to meeting you and squeezing your little cheeks (not too hard, promise).

Love,
Katie

Robbie gets to meet his “Aunt Katie” (that’s me!) at Christmastime. I’ll definitely take  photos in December. Until then, I dedicate this song to little Robbie Scott. I love you, baby! Welcome to life!

Then:

Now:

Even though the first set of pictures was only taken one year ago, Winston looks so incredibly tiny!

Let me explain something to you guys. I’ve been consistently photographing this kid since he was 3 months old! From our first shoot at Hotel San Jose, to his first birthday party (unfortunately, not blogged) to today – his 2nd – it’s astounding to look back and see how much he’s grown.

But, one thing has stayed the same: a wonderful group of friends gather together every year to celebrate this special little boy. It amazes me to see how many people love him – and each other – and remain so close!

So – onto this year’s party!

What do you get when you put a cute 2 year old + cake + a petting zoo with “widdle baby goats” + silly string together? One awesome birthday party for one cool kid!

Winston was rocking Austin chic, with a Japanese batman shirt, formal grey trousers and long, tousled locks. He even sported some pretty rad tattoos (temporary of course) and showed them off at every opportunity.

I’ve been to a few parties with petting zoos now… but nothing could prepare me for the shock that the miniature pony brought into my life. There was nothing miniature about him! Even though it caught me off guard, the kids loved riding the pony and I got some great shots of their trips around the backyard.

I can only imagine how happy and proud Ginger and Jason are of their son. Even as a spectator, it warmed my heart to see him so excited in the middle of his party. He really seemed to appreciate and enjoy every aspect: from the “widdle baby goats” (his words!) to the cookie monster cupcakes… he had a blast.

Ginger + Jason: thanks again for including me in your annual tradition and once again inviting me to capture your wonderful memories and spirits! I look forward to future par-tays!

There’s something to be said about spending time with a baby. While I don’t have any children of my own, I love being around little ones. I like observing the way they take in the world, making new discoveries and trying everything. “Oh, that blade of grass looks interesting. I’m going to put it in my mouth” (natural next step, no?).

For those of you who have met me, you likely know I LOVE red hair! That’s one of many reasons I’m thrilled to share this adorable baby boy photo shoot with you today. He’s the cutest thing with deep blue eyes, a sincere curiosity for the world around him, adorable dimples and the happiest smile I’ve ever seen up close.

We had a wonderful shoot in the morning light at the Arboretum. Here are the results:
